Smith McGhee graduated with a degree in Accounting from the University of Mississippi in 1967. He started in the insurance business in 1971 with a regional broker, Lawton-Byrne-Bruner. Smith primarily coordinated multi-national property and casualty programs and ultimately became a leading producer and one of seven partners at the firm. Marsh and McLennan acquired Lawton in 1986 and Smith became the head of Marsh’s St. Louis office, handling over $250,000,000 in premium volume. In 1991, Smith left Marsh to form Huntleigh McGhee, Inc. By 2004, the agency was sold, having grown to almost 100 professionals handling over $150,000,000 in premiums. In 2009, Smith left Huntleigh McGhee, Inc. to form Smith McGehee Insurance Solutions.
